Today’s #FossilFriday is rather jaw-dropping. This is a juvenile horse jaw dating back about 100,000-200,000 years. We’re able to tell it’s a juvenile as it has both baby teeth and a permanent tooth coming in. A real coming of age story if you ask us. #TheNat #BalboaPark

#TBT, it's #storytime! This image, from a historic photo album in our archives, shows J. Elton Green (1908–1986), one of the Museum’s former exhibit preparators, working on the #spermwhale jaw. The photo appeared in the Jan. 7, 1936 issue of the San Diego Union Tribune with a note describing Green as a “whale dentist.” 🐋 🦷 He is shown working to replace 12 teeth which had apparently been removed from the jaw while it was displayed during the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. J. Elton Green, in addition to being a preparator, went along on various Museum research and bird collecting trips, including several in Baja California. He later became a reptile and insect collector for #TheNat, while stationed in the South Pacific islands during #WorldWarII as a Marine Corps officer. ⭐ The jaw itself is currently on display! See it in Unshelved: Cool Stuff from Storage. 📷 #whale #paleontology #archive #naturalhistory #sandiego #throwbackthursday

That is one big turkey. 🦃📚 Here our #conservator, Melissa Behar, repairs part of the #Audubon Double Elephant Folio. This extremely #rarebook was being prepared for our Extraordinary Ideas exhibition, which opened up part of our #archive to public view. The first page of the book received the most damage over time due to use. Thank you, Melissa, for all your work! #naturalhistory #birdart #bigbook #archivist #thenat #balboapark

A #July4th rose for the Mother of #BalboaPark. 🌹

#Storytime: Many know Kate Sessions as the “Mother of Balboa Park” for her monumental efforts planting hundreds (more likely, thousands) of trees in Balboa Park. This fragile volume in our #RareBook Room is her personal herbarium of pressed plants. It was presented to her in 1872 by her mother for her 15th birthday. Obviously it was treasured by Kate Sessions, since she kept it all her life. 🌳

This one-of-a-kind book is on view in the Extraordinary Ideas exhibition on the third floor at #TheNat. #rose #redrose #katesessions #sandiego 😍 Have a beautiful #4thofJuly!

This is a #GrayWhale #skull on display in our Coast to Cactus exhibition. #storytime Starting in the 1950s, a biologist at #TheNat documented shrinking numbers of Gray Whales. He began to raise awareness by organizing whale watching excursions. Many people returned inspired, making life-style changes and pressing for protections. Helped by those efforts, Gray Whales made a comeback and were removed from the federal endangered species list in 1994. 🐋
